April Meeting 2016

What do you listen to/watch while you're sewing?

We opened the meeting with a question - what do you like to listen to or watch while you're sewing? The answers were varied! Here's the list: 
  • Bluegrass music
  • Audio books - specifically, the Hannah Swenson Murder Mystery books!
  • Movies or shows on Netflix
  • British music
  • Playlists on Spotify
  • Jazz music
  • Turner Classic movies
  • Podcasts such as "The Longest Shortest Time" and "Modern Sewciety" and "Serial" from NPR, and "This American Life" and "Crafty Planner" and "The Moth"
  • Watch reruns of The West Wing
  • Nothing - one sewer likes to sew in silence and be with her thoughts
  • Foreign movies with subtitles, although they are hard to follow along because you have to read what is on the screen
  • Reruns of Law & Order
  • Americana music
  • Fleetwood Mac
  • 80s music
  • One member says she matches her music genre to the type of quilt she's making - for example she listened to the Game of Thrones audio-book when she was working on a particularly grueling project.

News & Announcements

The Hamilton County Fair has reached out to our Guild asking if one of us would like to organize the Fair's quilt show. If you are interested contact Ellen.

We are working on organizing a Special Day with quilter Anne Marie Chany of Gen X Quilter. She'll be coming to town to talk about her new book and maybe have a trunk show or sewing demonstration. This will most likely happen this summer.

Charity Quilt Update


Our Modern Quilt Guild challenge quilt hung at Quilt Con and now we have it back. We will be giving it away to someone. 

The next Guild challenge is with scale - members signed up to help create and sew this quilt, which will be due next February.

Bee Blocks!

Dorothy's 57 blocks were presented to her.




Abby's orange peel blocks were presented to her.





This month, Christine requested hive members to make "Happy House Blocks" for and Annie requested Wonky Log Cabin blocks.



Show & Tell


Dorothy made this Ohio Star quilt and also incorporated the method of slice and insert AND she hand quilted it and put a sleeve on the back - it's a mash up of recent educational topics!


Michelle made this paper-pieced turtle and turned it into her name badge. 



Holly made this pillow for her grandmother to match a quilt she made for her. 


Holly also made these Kentucky state shape mini quilts for two friends.


Christine made this quilt with different sized square blocks.


Dana made this Noodlehead caravan tote.


Abby made these features from a free Anna Maria Horner pattern.


Abby also made this Trail tote.


Robin made this Plus quilt at a sewing retreat.


Robin also made this firefly but won't make another one because it took a loooong time! 

Improv Challenge Reminder

Don't forget to bring your Improv Challenge piece with you to the May meeting. Read all about the Improv Challenge here.

Education

For education, we split into groups and discussed projects that members were stuck on and gave advice on how to finish the projects.

April BEE blocks!

We are doing a Quilt Bee this year! Here's how it works: there are two bee hives. Each person in each hive gets a month. When it's your month, you show your block at the Guild Meeting, then the next month, your hive members bring completed blocks to you. You will probably get enough blocks to make an entire quilt top! 


The particulars: 

  • Your chosen block size should be between 12 inches and 15 inches.
  • If you want smaller blocks, you could request several small blocks that roughly equal one larger block.
  • Remember that skill levels vary among hive members. Challenging our skills and creativity is great, but, the block should still be attainable for novice quilters. 
  • You may request a specific color scheme.
  • If you would like a specific fabric or designer, you must supply the fabric.
  • If you miss a meeting, or you are unable to make the block, contact Queen Bee Annie. 
  • Use the hashtag  #CMQGBee

During your bee month:

  • Before the Guild meeting, you will:
    • Type up instructions for your block. This should include size requirements, color scheme, and instructions on how to make the block. You can either create a tutorial yourself or link to a site that has a tutorial. Include a photo and/or color inspiration.
    • Email this information to Wendy (either the instructions and photos, or the link to your blog post containing the information). Please email the information the WEEK OF THE GUILD MEETING. 
    • At the Guild meeting, you'll bring your sample block and share with the group, plus give a quick overview of what you want.

During someone else's month:

  • You will receive an overview at the Guild meeting of the block you are to make.
  • The instructions for the blocks will be posted here on this blog.
  • Make the block(s) and bring to the next meeting!

Hive ONE April Bee Block Instructions

For Hive One for April, you'll be making the Happy House Block for Christine. 


Christine asks that her hive members make one Manor House Block from the Bloomin' Workshop tutorial - which is available here.

She would like for you to follow the blog's instructions for creating the block. She found it handy to print out the block illustrations and measurements to use as reference while sewing.

Special requests:


  • Use a white background or low-volume print for the "sky" pieces
  • Use prints (or prints and a few solids) for the house that result in an overall cheerful look.

Hive TWO April Bee Block Instructions

For Hive Two for April, you'll be making Wonky Log Cabin blocks for Annie.


Using the Stack and Whack method, (here is a tutorial!), Annie would like her hive members to make the blocks with these particulars:

  • Make the center block no smaller than 4" by 4"
  • The trimmed finished blocks should be 12" by 12"
  • Use these colors: white, lime green, fuschia, orange, and yellow. Solids or prints are fine.
