October 2011 Meeting Notes

MINUTES
Heather Jones, President, led the meeting.  She began by welcoming our newest visitors, Michelle and Nancy.

Old News

Heather reported that she had received her JoAnn’s discount card, which is activated when you bring the card to a store, along with your CMQG membership card.  Members must go online to the JoAnn’s website to order the card, and thereafter have the card activated.  The card entitles any CMQG member to a 10% discount on all items.

The results of the voting for the Kona challenge are in:  the Guild has decided to use the bright color way for the Kona fabric challenge.  More details regarding the project will be forthcoming so watch the blog and our Facebook page for news on the challenge.  Thanks to Andie for running this one.

New News

Heather was pleased to announce that the International Quilt Festival, which will take place in Cincinnati in 2012, has accepted our proposal for an exhibit of quilts featuring a modern take on the Ohio Star quilt block.  The Guild needed 10 people to commit to make quilts and the following individuals have agreed to participate:  Sarah S., Holly, Victoria, Christy, Kelly, Jill, Andie, Jean, Lynn, Celeste/Loretta, Amy, Heather.  Here are the requirements for the quilts:

    • Quilts must be at least 48” x 48”
    • Machine binding is allowed
    • You can use a pattern if the designer is properly credited
    • People can work together collaboratively on a quilt
    • Any fabrics can be used
    • Quilts must be finished by the first of January because we will then need to send photographs of the finished works for final approval
    • Quilts must have a four inch sleeve on the back for hanging. Instructions can be found at  http://quilts.com/sleeeves.pdf

The IQF also has announced a call for entries for a new Modern Quilt Guild Showcase, which is to debut at the IQF shows of 2012.  Registration is open from January 6, 2012 to March 2, 2012.  More details can be found here:   http://callforentriesmodernquilts.com

The Centennial Barn’s harvest festival is Sunday, October 16 and the CMQG will have a booth at the festival.  Thanks to all who have donated so far.  Andie and Victoria will be running the booth, so please contact them if you are willing to work the booth.  See the pictures below for pictures of some of our member created items that will be for sale.

We are approaching officer election season.  The elections of new officers will take place at the February meeting, and all nominations must be received by January 9, 2012.  If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else for a position, please contact any of the current officers.  The descriptions of the officer positions are included in the bylaws.

Heather announced that editing-world executive Nancy Soriano will be a special guest visitor at our next Guild meeting.  Please welcome Nancy!

The swap for next month will be a fat quarter swap.  Bring as many fat quarters as you want to take home

Activity
Victoria led us in another great discussion of new projects.  She focused on small gifts for the holidays and provided much inspiration on things we could make, from the less practical knitted apple cozies to the more useful fabric gift card holders.  Victoria generously brought her book collection to share, which may be the most comprehensive craft book collection outside of the Library of Congress.  Victoria encourage others to share examples handmade gifts and as always left us all thinking that there are so many more things we want to be making.  Thanks Victoria!

As noted above, the Guild is having a both at the Centennial Barn's Harvest Festival. Thank you to all who donated items for our booth. We'll be selling all types of goodies, from sewing and quilting supplies to handmade items. Here is a sneak at some of the items our Guild members made:

Stop by the Centennial Barn this Sunday from 12-4 to purchase some of these great items!

SWAP
Only four members participated in the table runner swap this month, but the quality of this month’s swap entries left us all wishing that we had participated.  Check out these table runners:

Lynn made a really fun, wonky log cabin table runner with owls. Her quilting was gorgeous!

Christy made a beautiful postage stamp table runner in fall colors.

Loretta made a fun black and orange table runner with jack-o-lanterns, perfect for Halloween!

Danielle's table runner had an amazing appliqued spider web on it. How fun is that?!

Show & Tell

After a socialization break to sample all the snacks (thanks for Loretta and Janie), we began the popular show and tell portion of the evening.  I previously thought that this portion of the meeting was rowdy because sufficient wine had been drunk by this point, but last night there was no wine and we were equally riled up.  I think we all just love seeing each other’s work and getting inspired.  What a fun group!

Here are a few of this month’s features:

Janie made an adorable doll quilt for Loretta, inspired by a quilt made by Jenn at See Jenn Make Stuff

And Janie received this adorable doll quilt made by Gillian.

Gillian is working on some Swoon blocks for a quilt for her husband's grandfather.

Kara is working on a quilt for her baby (her first!) who is due next month.

Kara also brought in a wonderful heirloom quilt that will be shared with her daughter. The quilt was made by Kara's grandmother, using fabric cut from Kara's mother's baby clothing.

The back of the quilt is this really great vintage red floral fabric. So fun!

Lynn brought a quilt she made for one of her daughters. This was the first quilt Lynn ever made! She started with log cabin-like blocks and then chopped them up and added white sashing.

Jean shared a gorgeous rag quilt she made for her husband. We heard he wasn't too happy that she brought it to the meeting because that meant that he couldn't use it for a few hours.

Christy is working on an adorable baby quilt for a friend who is expecting a little boy. Hopefully she'll bring it back when she's finished so we can see

Jessica received this amazing quilt in her For the Love of Solids flickr swap.  She asked for something with bright, bold colors and quilter's linen, and Anna from woollykat didn't disappoint!

Celeste is working on a sudoku inspired baby quilt. We all loved the bright colors and the little giraffes peeking out to the side.

And the improv back was amazing, too! Great job, Celeste!

See all of you at the next meeting, which will be held on November 9 at the Centennial Barn from 7-9 pm.
