May 2017 Meeting

May 10, 2017
The Barn in Mariemont
President Abby Graham presiding

Happy May quilters! This year is flying by and there are some exciting activities and challenges coming to the CMQG!

We started out the meeting this month with a fun and interactive ice breaker. Where do you fall on the quilting spectrum? Traditional, modern or contemporary.

We were somewhat surprised by the results! Most of the CMQG members chose somewhere between modern and traditional. They appreciated using modern bright fabrics in a traditional setting. They also liked using traditional piecing methods with consistency in pattern with a modern flair.

Ellen, Abby and Jeanine feel between modern and traditional and gave thoughtful reasons for their position on the spectrum.
  • Ellen enjoys channeling women of the past who quilted using traditional methods and appreciates the history of the craft.
  • Jeanine appreciates and practices modern quilting more now, but is rooted in traditional.
  • Abby likes the symmetry of traditional quilting with brighter, bolder colors.

Quilt Con Charity Quilt!

The Quilt Con Charity quilt guide lines are out and the CMQG is looking for a committee chair. Ellen #1 has graciously offered her time in the past, but we need someone to take on some of the responsibility. We need volunteers who are willing to help design the quilt top, piece the top, binding, quilting etc.. If you are interested please contact Abby or another guild officer.

This year's theme is Modern Traditionalism. For more info on the guide lines, follow the link below.

We had a fantastic turnout for the pillow case charity project. Check out the photos below. We hope that the boys have fun cuddling with these little cuties.

CMQG Bee Blocks (Hives 1 & 2)

Hive 1 -

Check out these lovely teacups for Tara. She was queen bee last month! Enjoy!

Carol provided everyone in Hive 1 with a packet including foundation paper pieces, brown and colored pieced of fabric along with instructions for her block. She wants everyone to practice their paper piecing with her block! If you did not receive a packet, please feel free to contact Carol, or see her at the next meeting.

Hive 2-

Dorothy requested these fun multicolored blocks! She was queen bee last month.

Amy wants Hive 2 to create these 16 patch HST block. She is requesting a low volume fabric that reads as a background. Each HST is 3 1/2 inches. She handed out a guide for color inspiration. If you have color concerns, please feel free to contact Amy.

May Fat Quarter Swap!

Many fun and exciting fat quarters were brought for the May swap. We blindly picked from a bag and got something new and fresh for our stashes. Thank you to the swap committee for organizing this!

Stay tuned in June for the thread swap. Threads must be quilt store quality such as Aurifil, Sulky or Superior. You may bring 2 small or 1 large thread spool. We would love to see lots of participation in this swap, it may inspire you to try a new brand!

Show and Tell

Yo brought a fun pouch that turns into a tray! Cool and useful

Kay wowed with her Gravity quilt that was custom quilting by the TShirt Quilt Company. It is quite the show stopper!

Abby created a sweet quilt for a baby boy.

Look at this hand embroidered piece by Abby! O-H-I-O

Ginny brought her completed Hive 2 bee block quilt top! She is an inspiration to all!

Holly brought her sweet strawberry pillow using custom quilting on the back!

Don't forget to bring your completed Color Theory Challenge project to our June meeting! There will be prizes for those participants who win a category. For more information, please feel free to contact a CMQG officer or check out the previous blogs.

We look forward to seeing you on June 14th for another fun meeting!

CMQG Iron Quilter!

Iron Quilter Challenge
To be debuted at the May meeting

Do you have fabric that you aren't fond of anymore, can't remember why you bought it or tired of looking at? Are you ready for a fabric challenge? Then the Iron Quilter Challenge is for you!

Debuting in May, the Iron Quilter Challenge is based on the Iron Chef T.V. show in which chefs are required to use a specific food in all of their dishes. What better way to challenge your mind and creativity than to do the same with fabric?

Dana, our acting Chairman, has put together a fantastic challenge for us. Each member planning to participate will bring an item to the May meeting that they wish to pass on to another quilter. This fabric can be ugly, not your style, big or small print, and any color. Please bring your fabric concealed! We will then trade fabrics and you will make a work of art using this fabric!

Please click the link below for more details and rules for this challenge! We look forward to seeing what incredible fabric treasures people bring to the table!
