Sew In directions

Sew-In at the Lane Public Library in Fairfield.

10am - 3pm     Dec. 11

Bring a sack lunch or there are plenty of fast food restaurants close by.

The library is in the Village Green area of Fairfield - there's a park, Community Arts Center and a shopping area. The library sits next to the park - but come in the back entrance as the Community Room is on the other side of the building.

Click here for map.  This map is a tad misleading - the library is NOT next to Kroger. It's over by the CAC.

Call 858-3238 if you have trouble finding it!

October Meeting Recap

Hi All,

My apologies on taking forever and a day to get this blog post up! I hope all of those who were able to attend our October meeting had a great time; if you didn't come . . . be there in November!

So, first off, a big thanks to Amy for hosting our meeting. We'll be back at Sue's, though, for the November meeting. If you need directions or more info, email Heather at info@carpet-cleaners.info.

Hi ladies!
Next, WELCOME to all of our new members: Jean, Lynn, Janie, Kara and Jess. See you next month, right?

Some important things to note:

Our first CMQG SEW-IN will be at Sue's house in Wyoming on Saturday, November 6. Check in on the facebook page for more information and to RSVP in the next week or so. Bring your machines and something to sew. Heather will let us know via Facebook if Sue would like us to bring anything else. Plan on brown bagging your lunch. It's gonna' be sew-rific! (I kind of can't believe i just typed that ... )

We discussed getting the CMQG involved in some charity projects, perhaps with Cincinnati Children's Hospital. If you have any info in how we can get involved, or would like to help motivate that effort, please email Heather or let us know at the next meeting.

OCTOBER QUILT SWAP: We had a great time swapping doll quilts—I'm sure we'll do a second doll quilt swap soon, so if you didn't get to participate last month, don't despair!

NEXT MONTH'S SWAP (November), we'll be doing another direct swap (Secret Santa style) of a set of 4 quilted coasters. They can be any colors/fabrics, etc. These are super-fast, very cute, good for using up scraps and GREAT for practicing new quilt techniques. Check out this great tutorial for directions: Coasters tutorial from Flossieteacakes.

DECEMBER SWAP: So, we're also planning ahead for the December Swap. At our December meeting, we'll be swapping Mug Rugs - small quilted placemats big enough to hold your coffee/tea mug and a snack! IMPORTANT: If you'd like to participate in the December swap, please bring a mug to the NOVEMBER meeting; we'll trade mugs at that meeting and our swap partners will make our Mug Rug to coordinate with the mug we brought in.  If you'd like to participate, but can't make the November meeting, email Heather or leave a note on this blog or facebook, and we'll work something out.

SHOW AND TELL: We had a GREAT show and tell this month! Lots of talented members in the CMQG. Here are a few of the highlights - thanks for sharing, ladies, and keep 'em coming!

APPLIQUE TUTORIAL: Heather gave a great tutorial on raw-edge applique, like what she does for her gorgeous children's clothing at her site, Olive and Ollie. Thanks, Heather! I suspect we'll be seeing a lot of appliqued items at upcoming meetings!

THE NOVEMBER MEETING will be extremely important. This is not one to miss! And if you haven't made it out to a meeting yet, please try to come in November (the 2nd Wednesday of the month). Come armed with suggestions and brainstorming ideas for the direction you would like to see the CMQG go: more Sew-Ins? more charity projects? a retreat? etc.  . . . .    We will also be looking for volunteers to head-up some various aspects of the CMQG! This is a very exciting time, so please come with plenty of ideas so we can all help move this group forward! (Did I use enough exclamation points? !!!!!!  .)

Don't forget, bring your 4 quilted coasters to swap, and a mug to trade for December's swap (read more above). I'll be teaching a short tutorial on paper piecing, which will most likely be completely riveting. Don't miss it.

Have a great month, Happy Halloween, and we'll see you in November. Check the facebook page (CMQG Facebook) frequently for new items of interest and for changes to anything you see here.

September Meeting Awesomeness & Important Stuff for October

Well, to start with, a BIG welcome to all of our new members! We're so happy you could come, and we insist that you come back next month (and bring your quilt-lovin' friends).  Welcome, welcome!

Make sure to check out our members' blogs (listed on the right). If you're a member and have a blog, let us know so we can add it.

To start the meeting off, Amy T. taught a really great mini-class about making book-shelf inspired placemats.

Aren't they pretty?!?

We then progressed to a little show and tell (always amazing)!  Here are a few highlights:

Super-pretty star blocks

Extremely cute pinchy potholder!
"Tufted Tweets" quilt

Wonky cross quilt in reds and aquas

Lovely pink Bento Box blocks

After amazing show and tell (and I didn't even put all the pictures up) it was time for our potholder swap! All so different, but each one was wonderful! I think everyone left very happy—I know I did!

After and during all of the above, there was lots of laughing, tip sharing, tweeting, pretzel eating and wine drinking! You should probably come to the next meeting.  I'm just sayin'.

A FEW THINGS TO NOTE!!!!!!!!!!!

There is some fun stuff coming up, so take note!

1. Our next meeting will be October 13 at 7pm. Be there.

2. There is a Saturday Sew-In in the works! Look for a facebook post soon asking about your availability either the first or second Saturday of November. More info to come, but this is an excuse to sit and sew all day with each other. Awesome, yes? (Yes.)

3. At the October 13th meeting we will be swapping . . . . DOLL QUILTS!  The only parameter is that the quilt needs to be between 12 and 24 inches. It can be rectangular or square, but no side smaller than 12 inches or larger than 24 inches.  This is going to be super-fun, and a really great way to experiment and showcase who you are as a quilter. Just have fun!!!!!!!  We'll swap "Secret Santa" style at random.

4. At the October 13th meeting, Heather will be teaching a lesson on appliqué! This one you won't want to miss.

Have a great September, and we'll see you at the October meeting!

Potholder swap change

Hey guys -

Since so many people are out of town and the meeting location has changed, let's postpone the potholder swap until the September meeting. Just hang on to them until then! Hope you're having fun making them!

:)

July meeting: wonky quilt blocks, strip twist demo, and homemade pretzels from scratch!

The Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild held it's July meeting on the evening of the 14th. We met again at the home of one of our awesome members, Sue, who is such a gracious host. Her husband even made us homemade soft pretzels--from scratch--which were to die for. We're a pretty lucky group of quilters here in the Queen City.

Kelly again did a great job of organizing our block swap this month. Our theme was wonky quit blocks, using blues and aquas, with a punch of color in the center. We used Quilt Dad's tutorial, which is seriously the best out there, in my humble opinion. It was the first time for some of our members to make blocks in that style, and everyone's blocks turned out so well. There was such an interesting range of designs, even though all the blocks were made with the same parameters.

Andie demonstrated the Strip Twist pattern, complete with the blessing of Bonnie from Quiltville. I think we were all amazed at how quickly the blocks came together, and how they looked much more complicated than they actually were. Andie's choice of fabrics were gorgeous, as well.

A portion of our meeting was also devoted to show and tell, as it is every month. Kelly showed us a beautiful quilt top that she completed while she was a touring stage manager. Can you imagine sewing this in a hotel room?

I shared a quilt top that I just made. One of these days it will be finished!

Gillian also shared two adorable baby quilts. I wish I would have gotten pictures of those!

Our next meeting will be on August 11th at 7:00 pm, again at Sue's house. We hope you can all come! Amy will be demonstrating her pattern for scrappy place mats. We're also going to be participating in either another block swap, or perhaps a modern potholder swap. More details to come, but in the meantime feel free to RSVP to info@carpet-cleaners.info if you will be there!

Quick reminder!

Just a quick reminder that our next meeting will be held on Wednesday July 14th at 6:30, at the home of one of our members. Sue has again graciously offered to host our meeting this month at her home in Wyoming. Please RSVP by July 11th via email to info@carpet-cleaners.info or to me directly at olive_and_ollie@yahoo.com. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

June Meeting (or "You've got a great zigzag")

TIP OF THE MONTH (from Amy): Try using yellow rubber dish gloves to help move your fabric as you machine quilt.

Next month's meeting will be on July 14th at 6:30.

There's a TON of info packe d in here, so keep reading!!!!
The Cincinnati Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG) met for the third time on June 9th, and I have to say, we had a fantastic time! If you don't know anything about us, we are a new group of "modern" quilters looking for friends, inspiration, a creati
ve outlet and a group of people to "oooh and ahhh
" over our finished (or partially finished) projects. We're a small group, but getting bigger all the time, and always looking for new members to come share our love of all-things-fabric.

Thank you!
A very special thanks goes out to Sue for hosting our June meeting at her lovely home and plying us with wine and hummus. Sue has super-g
raciously offered her home for future meetings, and we'll probably take her up on that! Another big thanks to Amy for the photos!

Attendance & Welcome!
There were eleven members at our last meeting, including two new members—a big welcome to Laura and Emily!!! Wednesday evenings seem to be a pretty good meeting time, so for the near-future, we'll keep holding our CMQG meetings once a month on Wednesday evenings.

Attendees: Heather, Gillian, Andie, Sue, Tara, Victoria, Kelly, Amy, Emily, Laura, and Amanda

Some business:

Gillian agreed to take on the treasurer duties for the guild. We will be holding an officers' meeting in the upcoming weeks to discuss more details of how the guild will run and function, so if you have any thoughts or suggestions regarding dues, events, web "stuff", etc. etc. etc., please let us know via this blog or our facebook page (link below). And even if you don't have a comment, be our friend! :-)

Website info:
On the website-front: Ning is going to become a pay-only site pretty soon, so we'll be closing our CMQG ning site pretty soon. This is the phase-out period! Start looking for all info regarding CMQG on this blogsite and our facebook page. If you don't have a facebook profile, never fear, don't despair! You can still see the posts without having a profile - you just won't be able to post anything yourself.

Charity involvement:
As a group, everyone seems very excited about doing some charity-quilting. Heather suggested two possible groups through which w e can donate quilt blocks: Rainbow Around the Block is accepting 12 1/2" monochromatic patchwork squares for those who lost their homes in the Tennessee floods. CMQG will be donating blue/green blocks to this great cause throughout the summer. For more info, go to: http://www.annamariahorner.com/rainbow.html

Another great group is Operation Care Packa ge, providing handmade items for our troupes overseas. Read more about this at: http://www.operationcarepackages.org/

Know of something else we can get involved with? Let us know!

LESSONS!
Once thing everyone wants is to learn new techniques, and we have a wealth of talented members who can be our teachers! Andie will be teaching the Strip-Twist Method at our July meeting, Amy will be giving a lesson on quilted placements in August, I'll be teaching a quick paper-piecing class in September, and Heather w
ill give a lesson on appliqué in October. Lots of exciting lessons coming up. Each will be pretty quick - no need to bring a sewing machine! Just gather around, soak the info in and get inspired! Because of these lessons, our meetings will start at 6:30 to give us a little extra time.

Fat Quarter Swap
There are a few of us (OK, it's ALL of us) who have a very small, very insignificant, very powerful fabric addiction. As Andie so hilariously put it, "It's my secret shame". Well, the secret's out—we love fabric and just can't get enough. SOOOO, our very awesome Quilt Guild will have a monthly FAT QUARTER SWAP! Woohoo!!! Very simply, take what you bring. Bring three fat quarters, take three fat quarte
rs. You get it. Swap away the fabric you don't like anymore or have no use for and take home pieces that someone else may hate but you absolutely love! and who cares - it's new fabric! :)

TaraTweets
Tara would like something fun to do in Jul
y because July always kind of sucks. Any thoughts? This is also about the point in the meeting where Tara tweeted about Quilt Dad, our celebrity hero, our crafty Brad Pitt.

Maybe he'll tweet about us. Quilt Dad - tweet about us, puh-lease!
!!!! H is blog's awesome, so if you haven't already, check it out: http://www.quiltdad.com /

Upcoming local classes
If you have any interest in dyeing your own fabric, there are two classes coming up this summer that will be amazing. In Fabric Dyeing 1, you will c reate several shades of one color and mix colors to create a rainbow of fabrics. In Fabric Dyeing 2 you will create multicolor fabrics using a variety of techniques. Dyeing 1 isn't a p
re-requisite for Dyeing 2. D yeing 1 is June 27 or July 17, Dyeing 2 July 10 or June 22. To sign up or for more information call or e-mail Barb at rbgro

Show and Tell
We had some amazing Show and Tell at this month's meeting! If you attend next month, make sure to bring something of your own - finished or not -to show us!

Heather finished a gorgeous wonky log cabin quilt with little owls that I think we all secretly wanted to steal when she wasn't looking. (Hopefully that wasn't just me . . .)

Tara made a super-cute wedding gift quilt for some friends (who hopefully won't stumble across this blog before the wedding) using Moda layer cakes.

Gillian brought in two awesome quilts that she needs some encouragement to finish up! The first was a Grandmother's Flower Garden and the second was an Amish inspired quilt featuring a Geisha-print fabric.

Amy (our fabulous photographer) showed us the panels she made for a baby quilt featuring the coveted Heather Ross Far Far Away Princess and the Pea fabric.

And I brought in an extremely bright print apron I made as a result of my current "apron-kick".

Block Swap
In other news, we exchanged our blocks from our very first BLOCK SWAP! This month, we swapped 9-patches made with only black, grey, white and citron prints/solids. They turned out awesome! Thanks for participating, everybody—they were all really cute and well made. Here's Victoria showing off her block for the swap:

Maybe next month someone will have a quilt put together with the results of the swap that we can show here.

Next month, we will be making Wonky Log Cabin blocks. Sign ups for this month are closed with 11 participants. Block instructions will be emailed to you directly are on the Ning site and in the notes section on the Facebook page. Still looking for the best way to get this info out! If you signed up and don't have the instructions in your inbox by Tuesday, let me know. We do sign-ups for this event on a month to month basis, so check back here in early July to get in on it for the August swap!
